CONTROL AND INSTRUMENTATION (C&I) ENGINEER

BASIC FUNCTION OF THE POSITION:

The Control and Instrumentation (C&I) Engineer will use their design, maintenance and operations experience to review and/or generate designs, provide technical input and guidance and undertake inspections to ensure works performed by consultants and contractors are in accordance with the scope of the project and to ensure the works are designed to MMG-Khoemacau Botswana and international standards and regulatory requirements.

The position holder will also use their experience in planning, executing, monitoring and coordinating the cost-effective maintenance activities for instrumentation field and control equipment and services to ensure optimal equipment availability and reliability is incorporated into the design and installation of the project works. Additionally, the incumbent will work in multidisciplinary teams to collaborate with professionals from other engineering disciplines to ensure seamless integration of control and instrumentation across all areas of the project.

MAJOR DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Key accountabilities include:

Developing an understanding of the specific control and instrumentation requirements per project.
• Providing technical support for vendors, field electrical, control and instrumentation personnel, and engineering subcontractors as related to inquiries.
• Undertaking system and unit equipment analysis, engineering and design as required to support the project.
• Developing scopes of work and cost estimates for the project as required.
• Developing commissioning and operational readiness plans particularly with input to control and instrumentation systems and process control systems.
• Supervising the installation, commissioning and maintenance of all instrumentation and control systems.
• Using your knowledge, education and experience with motor and power protection systems to assist in delivery of the project.
• Maintaining project-specific requirements while applying general knowledge of mining and processing systems, equipment and project general specifications and standards.
• Communicating relevant project specific information with other departments.
• Providing technical interface with project representative(s).
• Establishing and maintaining effective relationships with all key stakeholders and business partners to ensure achievement of project objectives.
• Interpreting and ensuring compliance with project specifications and internal controls.
• Ensuring environmental impact falls within and complies with statutory requirements.
• Identifying and mitigating risks related to cost, schedule, technical performance, feasibility and logistics.
• Proactively reducing impacts associated with risks; ensuring design, installation, operation and maintenance of equipment is of high quality and standard.
• Managing a safe and healthy work environment where workers and contractors can deliver their outputs within a controlled risk environment.
• Developing and maintaining an electrical engineering schedule that provides timely delivery of material to fully support schedule.
• Communicating status updates to engineering management on a regular cadence.
• Relaying information regarding changes to scope of work for the project as they occur.
• Supporting weekly meetings with project team members and projects.
• Delegating and monitoring tasks given to engineering team members on regular cadence.
• Coaching, mentoring, and developing individual and team capability.
• Encouraging and leading a work culture of continuous improvement.
• Adhering to the company’s SHEC policy, procedure and Code of Conduct and acting as conduit to suppliers, and contractors.
• Applying and monitoring compliance with MMG-Khoemacau SHEC policies and procedures by subordinate staff, proposing remedial action and reporting all incidents and accidents, following established procedures.
• Adhering and enforcing all sanctioned SHEC and Operational Standards and Procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED FOR EFFECTIVE PERFORMANCE:

Bachelor’s of Engineering (Electrical) – with specialisation in instrumentation and control.
• Qualifications in Project Management will be highly regarded.
• A minimum of 8 years post qualification experience in process control, with at least 5 years as C & I Foreman/Supervisor/Superintendent in a heavy mining process plant control and instrumentation maintenance environment.
• Experience with DCS and various plant PLC’s and drives.
• Construction experience in electrical and/or instrumentation and control installations.
• Thorough knowledge of MQW&M.
• Thorough knowledge of Control and Instrumentation installation systems.
• Process Control and instrumentation skills.
• Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) programming skills.
• Supervisory Control and Data acquisition (SCADA) Configuration skills particularly Citect SCADA.
• Network skills including Ethernet, Profinet/Profibus, Modbus TCP/IP.
• Motor automation and control including electronic motor protection.
• Electronic feeder and transformer unit protection.
