FILTER PLANT SUPERINTENDENT

BASIC FUNCTION OF THE POSITION:

This role is required to provide commissioning supervision on the new tailings Filter Plant as well as operational oversight for the post commissioning phase. The Filter Plant Superintendent oversees the commissioning, operation and maintenance of the tailings Filter Plant and associated ancillaries, ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant tailings dewatering management aligned with metallurgical and pastefill requirements. This role integrates process engineering, maintenance coordination, legal compliance, and stakeholder engagement to optimize tailings filtration, water recovery, and filter cake deposition onto stockpiles for haulage to Zone 5.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Your key accountabilities include:

Overseeing commissioning as part of the owner’s team for the thickening and filtration of the tailings filter plant.
• Managing Technical Queries (TQs) and driving Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) throughout commissioning.
• Developing and implementing commissioning plans.
• Overseeing site testing and validation of equipment.
• Overseeing plant start-up, ramp-up and transitioning to steady state.
• Tracking and driving progress against the project schedule to meet key milestones.
• Coordination of interfaces with OEM’s, the project and operational management teams, to ensure technical alignment.
• Promoting and maintaining a strong safety culture on-site to support a safe work environment.
• Identifying anomalies and initiating corrective actions to prevent failures and maintain final product quality.
• Managing contractor services and performance for all filter plant related activities to uphold quality and safety.
• Planning and overseeing tailings filtration related projects, ensuring delivery within time, cost, and quality parameters.
• Initiating special projects based on operational assessments to drive improvements and innovation.
• Contributing to CAPEX and OPEX budgeting and championing cost-saving initiatives for facility optimization.
• Supporting optimal equipment utilization and enhancing plant efficiency through proactive operational oversight.
• Tracking the overall risk log for the commissioning and transitioning process to ensure requisite controls remain in place to contain identified risks.
• Document Control in terms of commissioning/operational process status.
• Monitoring and reporting KPIs—such as water balance, infrastructure availability, and plant efficiency—to ensure optimal performance and proactive risk management.
• Maintaining comprehensive records of spares, consumables, and maintenance activities to support accountability and operational readiness.
• Reviewing and validating operational data for accuracy and compliance, ensuring integrity in reporting and adherence to standards.
• Contributing to production reports and supporting incident documentation to maintain transparency and facilitate continuous improvement.
• Facilitating the training and development of tailings filter plant personnel to enhance operational competence and safety awareness.
• Ensuring staff comprehension and adherence to relevant acts, regulations, and company policies to maintain compliance and operational integrity.
• Overseeing commissioning contract delivery in terms of the SHEC file stipulations for the tailings Filter Plant.
• Enforcing the Fatal Risk safety protocol during the commissioning and operational phase of the tailings filtration plant.
• Enforcing both the Safety and Environmental management frameworks.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED FOR EFFECTIVE PERFORMANCE:

Degree in Metallurgical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering or related field.
• Must have experience in overseeing commissioning and operational ramp-up scope of the tailings filtration plant as part of the owner’s team.
• Demonstrated experience in Managing Technical Queries (TQs) and Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC).
• Must have at least 10 years exposure to commissioning/ operation/maintenance of horizontal membrane press filters, with 5 of those years at senior level.
• Full commissioning of a Metso Larox FFP 3512 unit with the following specifications:
o filtration area of 1153 m2,
o plate sizes 3500mm x 2500mm,
o up to 98 chambers.
o throughput of 374t (dry)/hr.
• Review of payment claims and managing variations.
• Tracking and driving progress against the commissioning schedule.
• Conduct daily reporting, progress monitoring, and escalate issues to MMG Management as required.
