The SHE Superintendent is responsible for overseeing the implementation and management of both the health, safety and wellbeing (HSW), and environmental programs for the Tshukudu Exploration Project.
This position will report directly to the Principal Geologist and will ensure that the integration of HSW and environmental responsibilities is carried out in alignment with the company’s goals, legal requirements, and industry best practices. This position will oversee the day-to-day management and performance of the HSE Department.
Key Performance Areas

Ensure Exploration Botswana’s compliance with Sandfire’s HSW and Environmental Standards and Framework. - Implement and maintain an integrated management system in compliance with local legal requirements and the Sandfire HSW and Environmental Group Standards in alignment with ISO 45001 (HSW) and ISO 14001 (Environmental) standards.
- Develop, update, implement and maintain effective Procedures for all HSW and Environmental requirements in compliance with local legislation and Sandfire requirements.
- Ensure the Exploration Botswana Project Team and contractors are informed of procedural requirements and compliant with HSW and Environmental systems and procedures.
Oversee the HSW and Environmental assurance program including scheduling, assigning, and reviewing audits, inspections and other assurance activities and monitoring corrective and preventative actions through to closure to ensure compliance with legal obligations and Sandfire requirements. - Oversee and manage the Risk Management Framework and processes including facilitating internal risk review workshops and coaching employee and contractor personnel on risk management processes, procedures and systems.
- Develop and lead HSW and Environmental programs and initiatives to promote continuous improvement and uplift the Exploration Botswana culture to be industry leaders for exploration standards.
- Develop and facilitate HSW and Environmental training programs, inductions, and awareness campaigns for employees and contractors.
- Lead investigations into incidents to identify root causes and contributing factors and develop corrective and preventative actions to prevent reoccurrence and promote continuous improvement.
- Prepare and monitor key HSW, Environmental and sustainability data including accurate data capture and reporting of HSW and Environmental statistics, monthly reports and other ad-hoc reports for Sandfire management and external stakeholders.
- Foster and promote effective stakeholder engagement across multiple disciplines, including internal teams, subcontractors, and regulatory bodies.
Work with the Exploration Group HSW and Environmental Department to ensure implementation and compliance with Sandfire’s HSW and Environmental Management Systems and Standards. - Work with and support the Exploration Project Team to ensure the implementation, improvement and use of HSW and Environmental Management Plans.
- Prepare, or assist with, the lodgement of documentation with statutory regulators to ensure all relevant laws and regulations are complied with to carry out Exploration Operations.
- Ensure compliance with all HSW and Environmental permits.
- Manage and mentor Exploration Project HSW and Environmental personnel on Exploration Botswana Standards and best practice operations.
- Monitor legislative changes and industry trends across Botswana where Exploration Botswana undertakes exploration to ensure ongoing compliance and maintenance of best practice operations.
- Collaborate with site management and operational teams to drive continuous improvement in HSW and Environmental performance.
- Other duties as per operational requirements.
Technical Competencies
- Internal / External Auditor or Lead Auditor
- Strong understanding of HSW and Environmental compliance including risk management, assurance and reporting for mineral exploration or equivalent industries
- Strong knowledge of Botswana’s mining regulations and international HSE best practices
- Ability to interpret and apply legislation and regulations
- Experience in Incident Investigation and Risk Management
- Proven track record in leading HSW and Environmental initiatives and managing multidisciplinary teams
- Knowledge of HSW and Environmental Management Systems
- Strong experience in environmental monitoring, including water quality, noise, and waste management

- Proven contractor management skills including experience through all stages of the contractor management life cycle

- Experience working with multicultural teams and community engagement in rural areas.
Qualification & Experience
- Tertiary qualification in HSW, Environmental Management or equivalent
- Minimum 7 years’ experience in HSW and/or Environmental with at least 3 years in a supervisory or managerial role
- Prior experience with INX InControl and Velocity Health, Safety and Risk Management Systems
- Experience with ISO 45001, ISO 45003, and ISO 31000, ISO14001
