Purpose of the Role

Lead the underground mining team to deliver the effective execution of projects and operational requirements by ensuring safe, cost effective and sustainable productive outcomes in accordance with all relevant legislation and sound mining practice. Accountable for managing, directing, and leading the execution of the underground scope of work which includes mining- and shaft- development, related surface and underground construction activities for the Underground Project.

The role involves fostering strategic relationships and integrated execution approaches with consultants, major sinking/development/construction contractors and key Jwaneng Mine stakeholders. The role requires a strong emphasis on safety, risk management, design, engineering, procurement, cost management, scheduling, construction activities, commissioning and handover.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Takes personal accountability for the Safety Leadership agenda for the Project, exemplifying and instilling a culture of Zero Harm throughout the business.
  • Implement Underground Mining Projects and regulatory standards and provide assurance to the GM and Head of Underground Development on compliance to these standards
  • Implement Mining performance monitoring systems and standards that are to be complied with by the Operation taking into consideration industry best practice and company objectives
  • Life of Mine Planning: Contribute in the formulation, motivation and approval of future expansion projects for the long term sustainability of underground operation.
  • Evaluate and implement mining project processes, systems, products or new developments to integrate opportunities and mitigate deficiencies to ensure continuous improvement and alignment to mining- and project- best practice, policies and plans
  • Responsible to ensure the achievement of safe underground mining and project objectives within required quality standards and budget by incorporating and aligning all relevant operational factors
  • Direct, coordinate and ensure the development, mentoring and coaching of the operation’s Underground Mining Talent Pool in alignment with the technical and leadership training framework of the Mine
  • Pro-actively manage Quality Control and Business Improvement processes
  • An extensive career of depth and breadth in the application of Engineering Management Principles in capital projects.
  • Track record of success liaising and dealing at senior levels with suppliers, JV Partners, regulatory bodies, community stakeholders, research institutions and industry associations
  • Contribute to the identification, analysis and interpretation of underground mining risks within the operation and contribute to the design and implementing of strategies and systems to mitigate risk and to prevent and reduce loss of the operation’s assets
  • Safety, Health & Environment: Model behavior that is consistent with the Company Safety, Health and Environment Vision and Values
  • Identify and interpret safety risks and resolve emerging issues; and ensuring that appropriate focus and resources are available to achieve safety objectives
  • Drive organizational values that affect Debswana’s relationship with its employees
  • Manage labour complement and training requirements of the Underground Mining Project Function (i.e. recruiting, selecting, orienting, training employees and identifying and developing personal growth opportunities
  • Prepare budgets and Operational Project plan and share with Stakeholders to ensure alignment of company objectives. Track budget versus spend and identify areas of risk and propose and/or implement corrective action if needed
  • Manage and respond to trends in safety incidents and injuries using the risk management processes

Other Job Responsibilities

  • Adhere to all safety, health and environmental and corporate governance principles, policies and procedures in area of responsibility

Education

  • Bachelors Degree in Mining or equivalent

Experience

  • Ten (10) years post graduate experience in a underground mechanized mass mining environment with at least 5 years at Senior Management Level
  • Management performance of Tier 1 Mechanized Mining Development Contractors
  • Having Shaft sinking experience and the management thereof
